No hope: Inhofe’s despairOctober 27, 2007 at 3:13 pm | Posted in Children, Climate change, Don't worry, Parents, Reassurance, Take action | Leave a comment
Dear kids, just in time for Halloween, here is a marvelous horror story for you. It gives a hint as to why America lags so far behind the rest of the developed (and some of the developing) world in dealing with the reality of climate change: there are actually people who are allowed to stand up in the Senate and spread nonsense about global warming. Yesterday this senator spoke for over two hours. You can guess perhaps he and his supporters are annoyed at the moment, because one of his latest video titles on YouTube yells at you in ALL CAPS!
INHOFE: 2007-GLOBAL WARMING ALARMISM REACHES A TIPPING POINT (03:49)
So, ‘the science is overWHELMingly taking away the BASIS for an alarm’, huh? Pull the other one—it’s got bells on!
We must be the ‘alarmists’ Inhofe defines as ‘the ones, you know, most live out in California’, ‘the far left extremists’, along with ‘Hollywood élitists’ that common men like himself cannot stand, let alone understand.
Inhofe kindly (but misleadingly) explains, that:
“an aBUNdance of new PEER-reviewed studies, analyses, and data-error discoveries in the past several months have PROMPTed scientists to declare that ‘fear of catastrophic man-made global warming’—and I’m using their terms now, the science’s terms—’bites the dust’ and that the scientific underpinnings for alarm are falling apart.”
Duh. Have you ever heard scientists using those terms? Inhofe must be a permanent resident of cloud cuckoo land to believe that kind of gossip.
His big concern is that The Eleventh Hour and An Inconvenient Truth will turn you all into liberal activists. How batty is that?
In his alternative reality, supported by rogue so-called ‘scientists’ he appears to be so out-of-touch with your lives—using children as pawns in a fear-driven chess game, pitting fear-mongers against fear-deniers, as he does—that he should be ashamed of himself.
(After hearing Inhofe speak for so long about global warming, and knowing the world’s most prestigious body of scientists is the IPCC, where CC stands for ‘Climate Change’, can you see now why you need to do web searches on ‘climate change’ instead of ‘global warming’ for your school projects?)
On Inhofe’s official blog, yesterday there were three separate posts about his two-hour speech:

Inhofe Speech: Climate Alarmism’s Impact On Children (07:41)
Did you get his message? It is this:
Senator James Inhofe (R-OK), Ranking Member of the Environment and Public Works CommitteeI am a very important guy, delivered a more than two-hour floor speech todayand I am so powerful I can waste more than two hours of public time in a prestigious building debunking fears of man-made global warmingtalking codswallop.
Inhofe is right about one thing: there are environmentalists who are telling you that nothing can be done to stop climate change, giving you the impression that nothing should or can be done to minimise its impacts. In this case, the environmentalists are spreading too much doom and gloom. The solution is to take significant action now and encourage others to do the same.
Inhofe is wrong on so many other points it is not worth listing them. He and other contrarians are so worried they are losing traction that they are fighting back. They have a public relations campaign that operates at many levels, in an attempt to make you think that climate change is not so bad. They forget to tell you that the reason climate change forecasts are as bad as they are now is that he and other contrarians are the very people who have prevented action to alleviate the damage for many years! (Irony is too gentle a word for this degree of deception.)
It is true that climate change is not getting better. It will not go away on its own. There are no quick fixes.
But the most important point for children and adults alike is:
please do not worry
What you need to know, and remember, is that there are adults working as hard as they possibly can in their capacity as professionals, as members of the community, and as parents, to minimise our carbon emissions and to help us consume less carbon-producing products and services.
There are three things for you to concentrate on:
- Learn who to trust
- Ask your parents if they have used a carbon calculator and figured out ways to reduce your family’s carbon emissions
- Ask your parents to please vote for the politician who commits to reducing your country’s carbon emissions by the largest amount as fast as possible
We can address climate change, and we can minimise its impact, and you need to know that there are many adults committed to doing so, on your behalf.
