Councils take Heathrow to High Court

Three local authorities are taking their bid to stop “illegal” night-time flights at Heathrow Airport to the High Court, it has been announced.

Richmond council in south-west London, backed by Wandsworth and Windsor & Maidenhead councils, claims many current night flights break the Government’s own noise rules.

The authorities will present their Judicial Review case at London’s High Court on May 20, a spokesman for Richmond council said.

He added: “The council contends that the current night-flights regime is illegal as some of the flights are noisier than are allowed by the Government’s own rules.

“If successful, it (the case) could force Transport Secretary Ruth Kelly to slash the number of aircraft allowed to arrive at Heathrow before 6am.”

Four of the largest airlines operating from the UK joined in an unprecedented alliance today to demand a total overhaul of airport regulation.Bmi, easyJet, Ryanair and Virgin Atlantic called for Transport Secretary Ruth Kelly to intervene to stop BAA raising airport charges announced by the CAA today.They said the CAA had failed to regulate BAA properly, and called for a new system that would involve the break up of BAA so Heathrow, Stansted and Gatwick were owned by different companies.The airlines also called for
