John Ashton, the special envoy of the British foreign secretary, David Milliband, told the UN Foundation on Tuesday that he and others would judge the conference on whether it produced a concrete commitment rather than a voluntary pledge.

“The question on the mind of everybody heading into those meetings … will be, is this talking about talking, or deciding about doing?” he told the audience.

As reported in:

“Are we going to bind ourselves to doing this, and doing it quickly, or are we just going to do what’s easy to do, what’s convenient, what’s voluntary?” asked Ashton. “The word voluntary means what you can do without heavy lifting, what you can do without mobilization of real political imagination. It’s not going to crack this problem.”

Good for John Ashton, as reported here:

It’s high time for the courage to state the obvious, make bold decisions and take action. American and worldwide public support for bold policies to combat climate change has never been stronger, so it does not take more than one brain cell for a politician worth his salt to figure out what to do.

A BBC article announced the results of a new Climate change: global poll [PDF 1.02MB] this week, showing two-thirds support taking major steps very soon:

Instead of attacking Iraq, for example, no blood need have been shed if we had spent an equivalent sum on developing renewables, improving energy-efficiency and other alternative technologies to reduce our dependency on oil and other fossil fuels. Just think where we would be now!

Keep you in the dark you know they all pretend
Keep you in the dark and so it all began

Send in your skeletons
Sing as their bones go marching in
Again
They need you buried deep
The secrets that you keep are ever ready
Are you ready
I’m finished making sense
Done bleeding ignorance at home
Defense

Spinning and spin it deeper
The wheel is spinning me
It’s never ending
Never ending
Same old story

What if I say you’re not like the others
What if I say I’m not just another one of your plays
You’re the pretender
What if I say I will never surrender

In time, or so I’m told
I’m just another soul for sale
Oh well
The page is out of print
We are not permanent
Temporary
Temporary
Same old story

What if I say you’re not like the others
What if I say I’m not just another one of your plays
You’re the pretender
What if I say I will never surrender

I’m the voice inside your head
You refuse to hear
I’m the face that you have to face
Mirroring your stare
I’m what’s left
I’m what’s right
I’m the enemy
I’m the hand that took you down
Bring you to your knees

So who are you
Yeah who are you
Yeah who are you
Yeah who are you
Yeah who are you

Keep you in the dark you know they all pretend

What if I say you’re not like the others
What if I say I’m not just another one of your plays
You’re the pretender
What if I say I will never surrender

(Keep you in the dark you know they all pretend)
What if I say you’re not like the others
What if I say I’m not just another one of your plays
You’re the pretender
What if I say I will never surrender

So who are you
Yeah who are you
Yeah who are you
