Heathrow expansion plans: booklet sets out the simple facts

23/01/2008

A new booklet highlighting the simple facts about the government’s proposed expansion at Heathrow airport will be issued this week – aimed at helping residents respond to the current Department for Transport (DfT) consultation.

Called A fair test for Heathrow?, the 12-page booklet sets out in plain, easy-to-understand language the DfT’s plans to build a third runway and a sixth terminal and to end runway alternation. It explains the implications for the two million people in communities around the airport and poses 20 questions for transport secretary Ruth Kelly, who has already stated her support for the expansion.

The booklet has been produced by the 2M Group – an alliance of 12 local authorities, including the Royal Borough, concerned about the environmental impact of expansion at Heathrow on their local communities.

Cllr Colin Rayner, lead member for highways, transport and environment, said:

“One of the many problems with the government’s consultation document is that it is written in complex, technical language that makes it difficult for most of us to get to grips with the very serious issues raised by the proposals for yet more expansion at Heathrow.

“Why can’t they ask three simple questions:

  • Do you want a third runway – yes or no?
  • Do you want an increased number of flights – yes or no?
  • Do you want more night flights – yes or no?

“This booklet uses plain language to explain what is on the government’s agenda and how it is likely to affect local people. Let’s face it, the DfT haven’t made it easy for us to put forward our views and I believe everyone will find the booklet a great help when they come to take part in the consultation. The council is also very keen to get people’s views to help us form our response to the government and residents can also write to their local MP.”

The booklet is being distributed on Friday 25 January 2008 along with copies of the Windsor Express and it is also available* on the council’s website Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead. The Royal Borough is also hoping to obtain extra copies so that the booklet can be made widely available through local libraries, council offices and First Stop Shops.

* When the booklet appears online, I shall add a link to the softcopy in this post – inel.  Update:here it is, albeit under a different name:
