BBC News Berkshire on today’s Slough Public Exhibition 23 January 2008

Today the BBC posted a news story that confused me. Up until now, it has appeared to me that there are two main types of event going on:

  • Public Exhibitions organised by the Department for Transport
  • Public meetings organised by borough councils

BBC Berkshire’s story clipped below, Town’s views sought on runway bid, made me think there was a public meeting being advertised, but now I think it is the Public Exhibition on this Department for Transport list:

Exhibition: Langley

Date: Wednesday 23 January

Langley Community Centre
Langley Road

Opening hours: 10.00am – 8.00 pm

Public transport:
Langley mainline train station
Bus no. 75, 76

Parking: 50 spaces allocated in car park across road from venue.

Having attended one of each very recently—a Public Exhibition (PE), and a public meeting (pm)—I can tell you that the DfT PE is nothing like a debate! It is a marketing exercise: a display of masses of well-presented materials supported by knowledgable staff, designed to impress people that the experts know best. Debate is not really much of an option for ordinary folk in this particular setting.

See what you think about the BBC News item as written:

Town’s views sought on runway bid

Residents in a Berkshire town are being urged to give their views on Heathrow Airport’s expansion plans.

Slough householders will meet to voice their opinions on how the plans, including a third runway and a sixth terminal building, affect them.

The controversial plans will be debated at a public consultation road show at Langley Community Centre …

and if you want to keep up-to-date on public meetings as they are organised and posted online, there are two sites to keep an eye on:
