Educational damage due to Heathrow expansion (triple glazing is not the answer)

Educational damage for 100,000 children due to Heathrow expansion
This article concentrates on schools located to the east of Heathrow airport. Our schools are west of Heathrow, outside Greater London, but still under the flight path. Has anyone done a similar survey of the west-side schools, I wonder? (This also explains why we receive offers from opportunistic double-glazing salesman.) You will see that I emboldened certain phrases below. We suffer from the noise of planes at the frequency of ‘The Heathrow Minute’ at the moment. If you actually time the sound of one plane, the noise often lasts for more than one minute, so when the planes are spaced 90 seconds apart, we get less than half a minute of peace between overhead rumbles! (Here comes another one …)

Third runway ‘would ruin lessons for 100,000 children’

Elizabeth Hopkirk, Evening Standard

More than 100,000 children could have their education blighted by aircraft noise if a third runway is built at Heathrow.

Research carried out by the Evening Standard has identified 114 schools in west London which will suffer from serious noise levels if the proposed airport expansion is approved.

Some of the schools already suffer noise pollution from aircraft but are facing louder and more frequent disturbances.

Others are hardly affected at present but would suffer disruptive levels of noise if the plans go ahead.

The noise at many of the schools would be so bad they would qualify for free sound-proofing from BAA, although this would not help if staff wished to open a window or let the children play outdoors.

Some would have to endure planes flying overhead between 6am and 11pm – as often as once every 90 seconds at peak times.*

The Standard surveyed seven west London boroughs to assess how many schools in each would be seriously affected by expansion.

• Hounslow said its schools already suffered severe noise pollution because of their proximity to the airport and provided a list of those that would qualify for free sound-proofing under the plans, a clear indicator of major noise pollution.

• Hillingdon supplied a list of schools that would be subjected to 57 decibels of noise, a level described as “highly irritating”.

• Richmond gave us a list of schools that would be directly or nearly below the flightpaths, all of which would suffer regular noise.

• Kensington & Chelsea supplied a list of schools that would experience noise of up to 50 decibels each time a plane passed – a level declared a “significant nuisance” according to a recent government report.

• Data for Wandsworth, Hammersmith & Fulham and Ealing was collected in collaboration with the local authorities by plotting the location of schools on projected noise maps from the Department for Transport.

Stephen Knight, deputy leader of Richmond council, said: “A large part of the borough will be significantly affected. At the moment schools are flown over one day in three but it will become virtually every day.

“If you are teaching a class and an aeroplane goes over you’ve got to pause and wait for the kids to be able to hear again. If this is happening every 90 seconds it will cause huge disruption. The implications are enormous and life-long.

“We are also concerned about air pollution and climate change.”

Nick Botterill, deputy leader of Hammersmith & Fulham council, said: “At the moment the problem is worse in the south of the borough. The new flightpaths would see Hammersmith and Shepherd’s Bush seriously adversely affected.”

A BAA spokesman said: “Heathrow’s future expansion is currently the subject of a consultation and future flightpaths are purely indicative at this stage.

It is therefore not possible to ascertain what the precise impact of growth will be on local schools.

“However, we recognise the impact our operation has on the local community and are committed to investing in schemes to minimise the effects of aircraft noise.”
