This is for the little girl who asked me how I knew the Queen was in residence today, and how did I guess it was Her Majesty’s (Official) Birthday?
Windsor Castle always has a flag flying over it. When Her Majesty is in residence, the Royal Standard flies, and the Union flag (Union Jack) is raised at all other times. The size of the flag depends, usually, on the weather/wind conditions, but on birthdays—real and official—the flag is supersize and is visible from miles around when there is a good breeze.
(The weather was better today than it was on the Queen’s real birthday this year, when we wished her Happy 82nd Birthday, Your Majesty! Look at the grey sky on that April picture and you can guess why it must be handy having an official date in June too.)
